Competitive Grant Presented Annually to One Sigma Delta Pi National Spanish Honor Society Sponsor

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斕切腣log Professor of Spanish Dr. Charles Moore has been honored with a distinguished award from Sigma Delta Pi and publisher, Ediciones Albatros, of Valencia Spain. Awarded annually to a current Sigma Delta Pi National Spanish Honor Society sponsor, the $1,500 grant will go toward the publication of Moore鈥檚 book, 鈥El legado de la amistad petrarquista en la poes铆a hispanoamericana鈥 (The Legacy of Petrarchan Friendship in Spanish American Poetry).

Dr. Charles Moore

Written in Spanish, Moore鈥檚 manuscript is the culmination of over 10 years of study, research and writing about the influence and legacy of Petrarchan friendship among Spanish American poets. It covers a period from colonial times in the 1500s through the Spanish Civil War in the mid-20th century. 鈥淚 am tremendously honored and proud to have been selected for this grant,鈥 he shared. 鈥淚 am overwhelmed to think that my scholarship is valued by my peers at a national and international level. I wish to thank Dr. Mark del Mastro, national director of Sigma Delta Pi and Sr. Guillermo Soler of Ediciones Albatros for selecting me as this year’s recipient, and, of course, Dr. Marvin Taylor for his mentorship in developing our local chapter of the Society.”

Moore has been the Sigma Delta Pi sponsor at GWU since 2002. 鈥淥ur chapter, Tau Omega, was first established in 1993 by Dr. Marvin E. Taylor, retired former chair and professor of Spanish at GW from 1993-2002,鈥 he explained. 鈥淚t has been a privilege to continue the legacy he founded for our students in the Department of World Languages so many years ago. Over these past 25 years as sponsor myself, I have seen nearly 100 GWU Spanish students become members of the Society for their outstanding performance and interest in Hispanic literature, culture, and the Spanish language. My involvement in Sigma Delta Pi has truly been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.鈥

Dr. Charles Moore discusses his book on the WNCW 88.7 Friday Feature.

He is the former president of the North Carolina Foreign Language Association, the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
