Curiosity and Initiative Helped Mollie Fuller Secure a Full-Time Position with Metrolina Greenhouses

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擬ollie Fuller has a piece of advice for 糖心Vlog students completing an internship. She shares two simple words that can make a lasting difference: 鈥淎sk questions.鈥

Fuller explained, 鈥淓mployers truly want to see effort and initiative from interns to see if they will be a good full-time employee. A go-getter attitude is important to show that you are willing and able to learn.鈥

Mollie Fuller headshot P

The 2026 GWU alumna speaks from experience. During her 2025 internship at Metrolina Greenhouses in Huntersville, N.C., she immersed herself in an unfamiliar industry, sought out opportunities to contribute, and made an impression on her supervisors. By the end of the internship, those efforts led to a full-time job offer.

鈥淢y manager started mentioning full-time opportunities towards the end of my internship,鈥 Fuller noted. 鈥淭hankfully, I was able to stay on part time throughout my final year at 糖心Vlog and then transition to full time a few weeks after graduation.鈥

Fuller applied for the internship knowing very little about the horticulture industry but willing to expand her knowledge. As a retail marketing intern, she worked with a major retail account, updating product listings to ensure accuracy. 鈥淚 even helped out in the greenhouse some,鈥 she noted. 鈥淥verall, my internship was not the same thing every day, and I really enjoyed that.鈥

One of her most challenging projects was an analysis of Metrolina鈥檚 online items. Completing the tedious task helped shape future marketing strategy.

Now employed as Metrolina鈥檚 retail marketing coordinator, she is responsible for digital product content and search engine optimization, support and execution of marketing campaigns, and cross-functional collaboration. She knew about a week into her internship that she would enjoy working there full time. 鈥淭he people are extremely kind and helpful,鈥 she described. 鈥淚 have never been afraid to ask questions. It is a very welcoming environment that is truly special when looking for a great workplace.鈥

While working in horticulture is new to Fuller, she was prepared for the marketing aspects of her job by her professors in the Godbold College of Business. 鈥溙切腣log gave me a great foundation in Microsoft Office and really helped with soft skills like communication and problem-solving skills that are useful in any career field,鈥 she reflected. 鈥溙切腣log staff and faculty truly want every student to succeed. I loved my professors and appreciated how much they genuinely care about all students鈥 success.鈥

Beyond the classroom, Fuller built confidence through opportunities such as 糖心Vlog’s Career Fair, where she practiced introducing herself to employers and discussing her future goals. 鈥淚 have always been introverted, but the Career Fair helped me to become more comfortable with talking to employers and be confident in myself when looking for internships,鈥 she shared.

Curiosity also brought Fuller to 糖心Vlog. A native of Indian Trail, N.C., she received mail from GWU when she was in high school and came to check it out. 鈥淚 instantly felt welcomed and a sense of peace when I first toured the campus,鈥 she described. 鈥淚 really liked the idea of a small campus and small class sizes.鈥

Arriving at GWU, Fuller explored several options before settling on a major in marketing with a minor in economics and finance. 鈥淚 decided on marketing, because I really enjoyed my general education business classes and the professors in the College of Business,鈥 she said.

Fuller said her business professors gave her a solid foundation to build her career, and the mentorship of Micah Martin, director of the Center for Personal and Professional Development, helped her obtain her first job. 鈥淚 worked for him in the Career Center during my senior year,鈥 she noted. 鈥淒uring that time, I learned a lot about communication, hirable skills, and of course resumes.鈥

Beyond helping her prepare professionally, Fuller said 糖心Vlog influenced how she approaches her work. 鈥溙切腣log鈥檚 focus on faith helped me learn how to put faith into practice in the workplace,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淢ost people think that work and faith have to be separated, but that is not true. 糖心Vlog taught me to lead with my faith and let success follow.鈥

She is excited about her future with Metrolina Greenhouses. 鈥淭hey have given me many opportunities to learn about the horticulture industry and see everything from production to sales to photography to shipping and so much more,鈥 Fuller shared. 鈥淚 love learning new parts of the industry and hope to continue to learn more. There is so much more to plants than one would think.鈥

For students preparing for internships of their own, her message remains simple: ask questions, seek opportunities to learn, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Lydia Robinson’s Journey Includes Division I Soccer, Study Abroad in England and a Competitive Novant Health Internship While Completing Bachelor’s and MBA Degrees in Four years

Looking at Lydia Robinson’s r茅sum茅, it would be easy to assume luck played a role in her success. The 糖心Vlog student-athlete from Charlotte, N.C., plays Division I soccer and is on track to earn both her bachelor’s degree and MBA in four years. She studied abroad at Liverpool Hope University in England, where she practiced with a semi-professional soccer program and traveled to 11 countries. She also was selected for Novant Health’s Ignite Internship Program within the Chief of Staff Department.

However, Robinson doesn鈥檛 view any of those accomplishments as luck. They are the result of a philosophy that guides her choices. 鈥淚 always say, 鈥楬ave everlasting goals,鈥欌 she shared. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 always key for me. Always have everlasting goals, because in my mind, you only have one life and you want to do it to your best ability. Take those opportunities, take those risks.鈥

Robinson鈥檚 willingness to put herself out there helped shape her 糖心Vlog experience from the beginning. She hadn鈥檛 planned to play soccer in college, but as her high school career came to an end, she realized she wasn’t ready to leave the game behind. She had already decided to attend GWU because of the close-knit campus, but decided to take a chance and contact the women’s soccer coach. She thought to herself, 鈥淲hat’s the worst that can happen? He can say no.鈥

The gamble paid off. The coach was looking for a fourth goalkeeper. After looking into her impressive record, he invited Robinson to join the team. What began as a simple email became an opportunity to compete at the Division I level while earning her degree.

She began her 糖心Vlog journey in Fall 2024 with plans to graduate a year early. Dual-enrollment courses and Advanced Placement classes completed in high school provided a strong start, while summer coursework allowed her to stay on track without carrying an overwhelming course load during the academic year.

Lydia robinson liverpool fc
Anfield, the home stadium of Liverpool FC,
currently has a seating capacity of 61,276.

Robinson also enrolled in 糖心Vlog’s Accelerated Master’s Program, which allows qualified students to begin earning graduate credit while completing their bachelor’s degree requirements. She is a member of the University Honors Program, a former Congressman of Honors District HAPY and a member of Delta Mu Delta, the International Business Honor Society.

Her academic path, however, wasn’t always clear. Robinson entered as a biology major on the pre-med track with plans to attend physician assistant school or medical school. While she enjoyed helping others, she soon realized direct patient care wasn鈥檛 for her.

While exploring other options, she discovered healthcare management, which allowed her to help people through leadership and decision-making. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥極h my gosh, that would be perfect because it’s the best of both worlds,鈥欌 Robinson reflected.

After choosing her major, Robinson turned her attention to fulfilling another longtime goal. For years, Robinson had envisioned studying abroad. In Spring 2026, that dream became reality when she traveled to Liverpool Hope University in England.

Before selecting a destination, Robinson researched the countries available through 糖心Vlog’s study abroad partnerships. Liverpool ultimately stood out because of its strong soccer culture, convenient location for travel throughout Europe, and connections through a teammate whose family lives there. When a different teammate learned of her plans to study abroad, she decided to join her.

lydia robinson friends

The experience exceeded her expectations. While completing coursework abroad, Robinson traveled throughout Europe, visiting countries including Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Hungary, France, Poland, and others. She learned how to navigate trains and buses, budget carefully and adapt to unfamiliar environments.

鈥淭he amount of independence and maturity I feel like I gained was game changing,鈥 she affirmed. Her mother even noticed the change and complimented her new level of confidence.

The semester abroad also gave Robinson a chance to play soccer in in a place where the sport is woven into everyday life. She joined Liverpool Hope University’s football club, and her teammate received an opportunity to play for Everton Football College. The Everton coach invited Robinson to goalkeeper practice. Training overseas exposed Robinson to a faster style of play and she learned new techniques that she plans to carry into her final collegiate season.

While there, another opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Knowing she would be entering her senior year early, Robinson began searching for internships. One day, from her room in England, she opened LinkedIn and started submitting applications.

Within days, she received a message from Novant Health in Charlotte regarding its Ignite Internship Program. The 12-week internship rotates students through departments across the healthcare system, including communications, marketing, finance, human resources, community health and patient experience.

She participated in a virtual interview and was accepted for the program that started in June. The experience has expanded Robinson’s understanding of healthcare administration while helping her build valuable professional connections.

The internship has also reinforced lessons she learned in her business classes at 糖心Vlog. Robinson pointed specifically to professional communication skills and networking opportunities as areas where classroom experiences have translated into the workplace.

Lydia Robinson, second from left, was chosen to participate in the Novant Health Ignite Internship Program.

鈥淓very single time I’m on a new Zoom call or meet a new person, I have to redo this elevator pitch pretty much being like, ‘Hi, I’m Lydia. I go to 糖心Vlog, majoring this, I want to do this,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淪o that definitely helped me.”

Throughout her internship this summer, Robinson has carefully recorded names and professional contacts, later connecting with many of them through LinkedIn. One of the people she connected with posted about an internship opportunity for this fall, so she applied. “You never know where it could go,” she noted, expressing an interest in the program.

Whether pursuing an accelerated degree plan, studying abroad, walking onto a collegiate soccer team or gaining career experience in an internship program, Robinson believes growth begins with a willingness to try. 鈥淚鈥檝e gained so many things in life from just putting myself out there,鈥 she stated.

For Robinson, each accomplishment isn’t a finish line鈥攊t’s simply another step toward her next “everlasting goal.”

Viral 鈥楪runge Country鈥 Artist Completes Entertainment Lineup for Aug. 22 Community Celebration

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斕切腣log has announced the final musical performer for Webbstock 2026. Mississippi-based singer-songwriter Sam Donald will join the entertainment lineup for the community celebration on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Brinkley Amphitheater. The free event will welcome students, families, alumni and community members for an evening of live music, food, children’s activities and fellowship as 糖心Vlog launches a new academic year.

Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Student Engagement Brian Arnold said Webbstock is designed to create opportunities for students to engage, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. “The start of a new semester is about more than classes鈥攊t’s about finding your place on campus and connecting to the surrounding community. Webbstock is designed to bring our campus and community together through music, fun, and shared experiences. Whether you’re a first-year student or a returning Bulldog, we hope this event helps everyone feel connected and excited for the year ahead.”

Originally from Jackson, Miss., and now residing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Donald spent years performing as a guitarist in various bands before stepping into the spotlight as a lead performer and songwriter in 2021. His growing popularity has earned attention across the country, particularly after several of his songs and videos went viral on TikTok in early 2024, generating more than 15 million views in less than six weeks. The viral success led to a dramatic increase in streaming activity, with his music seeing more than a 400 percent increase in listeners.

Working alongside longtime producer Zack Keel, Donald embraced a new creative direction in 2023. Rather than pursuing conventional genre expectations, the pair focused on creating music that flowed naturally from their songwriting process. The result has been a distinctive sound often described as “grunge country,” blending the raw energy of alternative rock with the storytelling traditions of country music.

He first introduced this style through the song “Make You Want God,” which became the foundation for his evolving musical identity. He continued developing the sound through subsequent releases, including “Nickels & Dimes” and “Son of the Sandman,” establishing a growing fan base drawn to his authentic lyrics and genre-blending approach.

Donald joins Feeling 22: A Tribute to Taylor Swift and Y2K Kids to complete this year’s entertainment lineup. Together, the three acts will provide an evening of performances spanning multiple musical styles and generations, creating a memorable experience for attendees.

In addition to live entertainment, the event will feature a variety of local food vendors, artisans and small businesses. Guests can enjoy everything from soul food to freshly squeezed lemonade and shop for handcrafted soaps, permanent jewelry, candles and more.

Whether guests are returning to campus, visiting for the first time or simply looking for a fun summer evening, Webbstock offers an opportunity to connect, celebrate and create memories together.

Endowment Honors Cleveland County Couple鈥檚 Longtime Love of Music, Education, and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擬usic was woven into everyday life in the home of Robert and Evelyn Cabaniss of Cleveland County, N.C. The family listened to a wide variety and sometimes sang along. To honor their parents鈥 love for music, support for education and service to the community, the couple鈥檚 children鈥擬ark Cabaniss, Garry Cabaniss, and Michele Cabaniss Peraldo鈥攔ecently endowed the Robert and Evelyn Cabaniss Music Scholarship at 糖心Vlog.

Reflecting on the family’s decision, Michele said, 鈥淥ur family is deeply honored to support the music department at 糖心Vlog through this endowment in memory of our parents. Music was a meaningful part of their lives, and we hope this gift will encourage and inspire students for generations to come while honoring the values they cherished.鈥

While considering the various ways they could memorialize their parents, 鈥渁 scholarship seemed like the perfect choice,鈥 noted Mark, an award-winning music composer and publisher. 鈥淪ince our parents spent the better part of their lives in Cleveland County and were supporters of 糖心Vlog鈥攁nd my brother is a 糖心Vlog graduate鈥攅stablishing the scholarship at 糖心Vlog was a natural and fitting way to celebrate their legacy.鈥

Robert&EevelynCabaniss
Robert and Evelyn Cabaniss

During a recent visit to campus, Mark was impressed by what he saw in the Department of Music. 鈥溙切腣log understands that music education is about much more than teaching notes and rhythms,鈥 he stated. 鈥溙切腣log combines academic excellence with a strong sense of purpose and faith. It is a place where students are encouraged to develop their talents while also growing as people of character. Music educators have an extraordinary opportunity to shape young lives through the transforming power of music, and 糖心Vlog is preparing students to do exactly that. Investing in future music educators creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond any single classroom.鈥

Mark鈥檚 passion for music was inspired and nurtured by his parents. 鈥淢y father sang in the Shelby (N.C.) First Baptist Church choir for about 50 years; he grew up at Zion Baptist Church in greater Shelby and at the age of 5, sang his first solo in that church standing on a pew,鈥 he shared. 鈥淢y mother sang around the house and had a beautiful voice and did a stint of taking piano lessons as an adult.鈥

Mark said his mother often recalled telling a friend, respected Shelby piano teacher Jean Mauney, that she hoped her child would one day study music. When he was 8 years old, his mother asked if he would like to take piano lessons.

鈥淭hat simple conversation changed the course of my life,鈥 Mark said. 鈥淚 fell in love with the process of making music and naturally gravitated toward chorus, band, and drama classes and ensembles throughout junior high and high school. Eventually, that passion led me to earn a degree in music education with a concentration in trumpet.鈥

The encouragement provided by his parents and Cleveland County teachers helped launch him into a career that has influenced musicians and music educators around the world. Mark serves as president and CEO of Jubilate Music Group and has enjoyed success as an ASCAP composer and arranger. He is also an accomplished author, broadcaster, and educator. His published works have been performed nationally and abroad, and his concert musical 鈥淭riumph of Faith (co-written with Mark Blankenship) received its world premiere at Carnegie Hall. A multiple recipient of ASCAP’s Popular Music Award, Mark is also a Dove Award- and Angel Award-winning producer.

鈥淢y parents believed deeply in the value of education, as does the larger Cabaniss (and Evelyn Woodall) family,鈥 Mark said. 鈥淥ur parents encouraged us to pursue higher education and supported us every step of the way, financially and otherwise. Looking back, I realize how much of my professional journey鈥攆rom teaching to publishing to writing books鈥攔ests on the foundation they helped create. They encouraged discipline, curiosity, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.鈥

Whether through professional leadership, church involvement, volunteer service, or caring for their family, Robert and Evelyn invested in friends, neighbors, church members, and countless others throughout the community. Their legacy was not defined by a single accomplishment, but by decades of faithful service.

鈥淢y father, Robert G. Cabaniss, was a respected business executive and civic leader who was deeply involved in the Lions Club, earning the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the organization’s highest honor,鈥 Mark noted. 鈥淢y mother, Evelyn Cabaniss, devoted more than forty years to caring for children in the First Baptist Shelby nursery in addition to being involved in other volunteer service activities. She quietly touched countless lives through her kindness, patience, and faithful service.鈥

The scholarship will support aspiring music educators who will, in turn, influence future generations through their own classrooms and communities. For the Cabaniss children, the opportunity to extend their parents’ influence far into the future is the greatest value of the gift.

鈥淭hat may be the most meaningful aspect of all,鈥 he said. 鈥淎 scholarship like this becomes a living memorial. Long after my siblings and I are gone, students will continue benefiting from the values my parents embodied. The scholarship doesn’t merely remember Robert and Evelyn Cabaniss; it extends their influence into the future. That thought brings me tremendous joy and peace.鈥

Offered by 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Searight Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) Program, ASAP was designed to strengthen analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. The college-readiness experience introduced students to academic disciplines and career pathways and emphasized hands-on learning, professional development and Christian business ethics. Held on Pinnacle鈥檚 campus, students were mentored by 糖心Vlog faculty and staff, along with a regional industry expert.

Students participated in courses covering artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, personal finance and budgeting, project management, medical terminology, global food systems and transitioning to college. The curriculum was designed to help students understand emerging technologies, financial literacy, healthcare careers, leadership principles and the interconnected challenges facing modern society.

the opportunity to explore topics she might study
in college.

Pinnacle student Taylor Scott said her favorite classes were finance and agriculture, because she deepened her understanding of some concepts while discovering new ideas. She appreciated learning life skills that can help her in the future.

The program also exposed students to subjects not typically available at the high school level, helping them explore future educational opportunities. 鈥淚 think that especially having these classes that aren鈥檛 offered at our school 鈥 gives us kind of a pathway that we can learn about to go to college,鈥 noted Ryleigh Dellinger.

Students, who are interested in healthcare careers, like Iymani Coleman, gained specialized knowledge through the medical terminology course. They focused on building vocabulary through root words, prefixes, suffixes and commonly used medical abbreviations.

A highlight of the program was the Trash to Treasure Challenge, a hands-on initiative that encouraged students to repurpose everyday recyclable materials into functional and artistic creations. Working independently or in teams, students transformed discarded items into innovative products, challenging them to apply creativity, resourcefulness, and problem-solving abilities.

ASAP Winners
The winners of the Trash to Treasure Challenge, from left, Iymani Coleman, Taylor Scott, and Alevia Miller, show their project to the judges. They made a school kit for underprivileged kids.

The activity culminated in formal presentations before a panel of judges, where students showcased their projects and explained how their creations could benefit society. The experience reinforced lessons in sustainability, teamwork and innovation while allowing students to demonstrate the skills they had developed.

The winning team included Scott, Coleman, and Alevia Miller. They made a school kit for underprivileged kids. Some of the other items students crafted were a water purification system and a checkerboard table.

As the program concluded, students left with continuing education credits, new academic experiences and a broader understanding of potential career paths. The partnership between 糖心Vlog and Pinnacle Classical Academy provided a foundation for future success while encouraging students to explore their interests beyond the traditional high school curriculum.

Molly Hanley Discusses Her Coaching Philosophy, Inspiration, and the Vision for Launching a New Program

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擬olly Hanley, the first head coach for 糖心Vlog Acrobatics and Tumbling, recently sat down for a Q&A with 糖心Vlog Sports Information. She offers some insight into her background, building a program, and what to expect from the first competitions and early years.

Q: What led you to coaching?

Hanley: I competed in artistic gymnastics for 14 years before continuing my athletic career in acrobatics & tumbling at the collegiate level. During my final five years of gymnastics, I competed as a Level 10 athlete, the highest level of the USA Gymnastics Women’s Development Program. I began coaching part-time while I was in high school, working primarily with our Level 1 and Level 2 team athletes. Through that experience, I discovered how rewarding it was to help young athletes learn new skills and gain confidence in themselves. Watching their excitement when they achieved something they had worked hard for gave me a sense of fulfillment that was different from competing myself. I recognized the impact coaches can have on an athlete’s experience, growth, and development both in and out of sport. That realization is what inspired me to pursue coaching professionally and ultimately led me to a career centered on mentoring and developing student-athletes.

Q: What are your principles in guiding a team and what is your coaching style?

Hanley: I believe in coaching through a comprehensive approach that prioritizes the development of the whole student-athlete. The lessons learned through sport are invaluable and directly translate into success in life and future careers. My coaching style is built on high expectations, strong relationships, and personal accountability. I strive to create an environment where athletes understand that they are responsible for their attitude, effort, impact on others, and commitment to the team. Holding athletes accountable while also providing the support and guidance necessary for them to grow is key. This will be a program that develops successful competitors and resilient individuals who are prepared to succeed long after their athletic careers are over.

Q: What are your keys to building a winning program?

Hanley: My three keys to building a winning culture and program are grit, discipline, and belief. In my athletic and professional career, I learned how to stay committed when success was not immediate, trust the process when results were not yet visible, and continue showing up every day with the same level of effort and purpose. A winning culture is built by people who are willing to embrace hard work, persevere through adversity, and remain committed to a shared vision.

Q: Who has been your biggest inspiration in your journey?

Hanley: My college coach, Emily Lewis (then Emily Powers), has been one of my biggest inspirations and the primary reason I pursued coaching. I had the privilege of being a member of her inaugural team and witnessed firsthand what it takes to build a program from the ground up. During my time as a student-athlete, our team grew from just seven athletes to more than thirty and qualified for nationals during my senior year. Watching Coach Lewis lead with vision, consistency, and a genuine investment in her athletes showed me the impact a coach can have on both a program and the individuals within it. The founding women of our sport also inspire me. The legacy they created and the opportunities they pioneered for generations of athletes to come have shaped the sport into what it is today. Their dedication to growing the sport and creating opportunities for women in athletics is something I deeply respect and aspire to honor through my own coaching career.

Q: What drew you to 糖心Vlog and building this program?

Hanley: 糖心Vlog stood out to me because of the beautiful campus, welcoming community, modern facilities, and the genuine excitement surrounding the addition of Acrobatics & Tumbling. Throughout the interview process, it became clear that there is strong institutional support for building a successful program and providing student-athletes with a meaningful experience. What drew me most to this opportunity, however, was the challenge and reward of building something from the ground up. As a student-athlete, I was part of a first-year program and experienced firsthand what it takes to establish a foundation for future success. There is something incredibly rewarding about knowing that your effort today can create opportunities for those who come after you. As a coach, I want to help student-athletes experience that same sense of ownership and pride.

Q: What are the biggest challenges of competing across multiple events in acrobatics and tumbling?

Hanley: One of the biggest challenges in Acrobatics & Tumbling is that many athletes enter the collegiate level with little to no direct experience in the sport. As a result, a large part of the process involves teaching completely new skills while also helping athletes adjust to the demands of a team environment. From a coaching perspective, this requires a strong emphasis on progression and patience. The fall semester is focused on building the technical and foundational skills that will be used in competitions during the spring. Every discipline requires its own level of precision, and those elements take time to develop.

Q: How has your experience helped prepare you to build this program?

Hanley: Having seen the growth of A&T over nearly a decade as both an athlete and a coach, I recognize how much of its success is rooted in smaller institutions that have committed to investing in and developing it. Those environments taught me to be resourceful, adaptable, and intentional with every aspect of the program. My approach is rooted in a “get it done” mentality, where success is built through consistency, accountability, and attention to detail. I am confident that my background will allow me to build a sustainable, competitive program here at 糖心Vlog.

Q: What has fueled the growth of the sport, and where is it headed?

Hanley: The rapid growth of Acrobatics & Tumbling can be attributed to the athletes, coaches, and pioneers who built the sport from the ground up. It was created to display the strength, athleticism, and versatility of female athletes who previously did not have a clear collegiate outlet to express those abilities in a unified team format. As both an athlete and a coach, I have seen firsthand how intentional the development of this sport has been. It was built around opportunity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to growing something new. That foundation has created a strong sense of community and purpose within the sport, which continues to drive its expansion. Looking ahead, I believe Acrobatics & Tumbling will continue to grow as more institutions recognize the value it holds as an NCAA sport for women as visibility increases and more.

Q: During the gap year to recruit and build the program, what can fans expect in 2026?

Hanley: During the gap year, 糖心Vlog fans can expect to see a program that is highly visible and actively laying the foundation for long-term success. Beyond recruiting I want to support my fellow coaches and integrate myself into the 糖心Vlog community. The presence of acrobatics & tumbling will be felt across campus, even before athletes arrive on. The goal is to create early buy-in and pride in the program so that when athletes arrive in fall 2027, they are stepping into something already rooted in standards, expectations, and support. This year is about establishing a program identity that reflects discipline and a commitment to excellence from day one.

Q: Looking ahead to 2027 and the first competitions, what are your expectations for the program鈥檚 early years?

Hanley: From day one, the standard will be centered on excellence in the details with clean technique, strong synchronization, and athletes who compete with composure under pressure. Establishing that foundation is critical, because it sets the tone for how the program will grow in the years that follow. As we continue to develop, my goal is for 糖心Vlog to quickly establish itself as a competitive program on the national stage. With the sport gaining NCAA championship recognition, there is an opportunity for programs being built now to position themselves early as contenders. My expectation is that we will progress year by year into a program that is consistently in conversation at the national level.

Q: If you could tell the 糖心Vlog community anything about your sport and what to expect, what would it be?

Hanley: Get excited. Acrobatics & Tumbling is an incredibly entertaining sport to watch, even without a deep understanding of the scoring system or technical rules behind each event. More importantly, I want the 糖心Vlog community to know what kind of student-athletes will represent this program. The athletes I have had the privilege of competing alongside and coaching are some of the most dedicated and driven individuals I have ever been around. They are balancing demanding academic schedules, internships, clinical experiences, and involvement across campus, all while committing fully to their sport. Their ability to show up every day with discipline and a team-first mindset is what makes this sport special. I have no doubt that the student-athletes who join this program will embody those same qualities. I would encourage the 糖心Vlog community to not only watch the sport, but to invest in the people behind it. This program will be built on effort, character, and pride in representing the university at the highest level.

Upgrades will Brighten Worship, Gatherings, and Student Performances in Campus Landmark

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斕切腣log has received a generous $66,500 grant from The Dover Foundation to support a major lighting renovation in Dover Chapel. The project will enhance one of the University鈥檚 most treasured and historic spaces, further strengthening its role as a central gathering place on campus.

Dover chapel plaque SC

The Dover Foundation, established by members of the Dover family, reflects a longstanding legacy of generosity that has helped shape 糖心Vlog for decades. Dover Chapel, named in memory of John R. Dover Jr. and built in 1972, stands as a lasting symbol of that legacy, serving as the spiritual heart of campus where worship services, student gatherings, convocations, concerts, and special events take place.

Over the years, however, the sanctuary鈥檚 aging lighting system has become increasingly inadequate for the needs of modern worship and programming. The Dover Foundation grant will fund a comprehensive lighting upgrade designed to enhance both the functionality and atmosphere of the chapel sanctuary while preserving its beauty and character.

University leaders say the project will expand both the artistic and experiential possibilities of the chapel. 鈥淭his sacred space is home to a number of campus events across the academic year, including serving as the home base for 糖心Vlog鈥檚 choral ensembles, departmental recitals, guest artist series concerts, and small ensemble performances,鈥 noted Dr. Aaron M. Rice, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music. 鈥淲e are so excited about the new enhancements that will make this space a destination venue for the performing arts at 糖心Vlog. Our partnership with the Dover Foundation not only enhances one of our most iconic venues, it also provides an exceptional opportunity for our students鈥 development and growth. We鈥檙e truly grateful for the Dover Foundation鈥檚 continued investment in 糖心Vlog and the Department of Music.鈥

Worship at the Webb

While the renovation will enhance performance and event capabilities, it also holds deep significance for the chapel鈥檚 spiritual role on campus. Dr. James R. McConnell Jr., interim dean of the School of Divinity, emphasized the importance of the chapel to the University鈥檚 spiritual and academic life. 鈥淭he lighting upgrade in the Dover Chapel is a welcome improvement,鈥 McConnell shared. 鈥淒over Chapel is a sacred space for School of Divinity chapel services, and the new lighting will further enhance the chapel as a place of worship for students and faculty.鈥

Dr. Josh Parrott, vice president for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain, echoed McConnell鈥檚 sentiments, and highlighted the chapel鈥檚 broader impact on students and the campus community. 鈥淭he chapel is consistently recognized as one of the University’s greatest structural assets, and it is home to several University worship services throughout the year,鈥 Parrott emphasized. 鈥淥ur students and other members of the community use the chapel for prayer, Scripture reading, and worship. Chapel improvements aid in expanding God’s kingdom, spreading the Gospel, and help as we care for the souls of our community鈥攖hank you to all who are involved in the process.鈥

The project includes the removal of outdated lighting fixtures and the installation of six new cross-design chandeliers equipped with energy-efficient lighting. These chandeliers will provide improved 360-degree illumination throughout the sanctuary, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment for worship services and campus events. To ensure long-term maintenance and safety, the renovation will also include motorized winch systems and cables that allow the chandeliers to be safely lowered to floor level for cleaning and servicing.

Dover Lighting
Improvements will include replacing ten wall-mounted
light fixtures.

Additional improvements will include replacing ten wall-mounted light fixtures with new ones designed to complement the chapel鈥檚 architectural style while enhancing ambient lighting throughout the sanctuary. The project will also enhance the lighting around the pulpit with a new system that can be easily adjusted to match the tone and purpose of each service or event, offering clearer visibility for speakers while creating a more inviting, focused, and meaningful atmosphere for worship, ceremonies, and gatherings.

The significance of the project extends beyond infrastructure, reflecting a continued investment in the University鈥檚 mission and student experience. 鈥淭he generosity of The Dover Foundation will help ensure that Dover Chapel continues to serve as a vibrant gathering place for worship, reflection, and community for generations of students,鈥 said Candice Thomas, director of Foundation Relations and Corporate Partnerships. 鈥淭his project will significantly improve the worship experience and expand the chapel鈥檚 ability to host meaningful campus events.鈥

High School Students Explore Food Systems, Careers, and Real-World Challenges Through Immersive Event

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擟heese, strawberries and avocados became more than everyday foods for participants in 糖心Vlog鈥檚 inaugural Summer Searight Scholars Program (SSP). Through hands-on learning, students explored how those items reach their plates鈥攁nd why, in some communities across the United States, access to fresh and nutritious food remains a challenge.

Developed in partnership with the Foothills Workforce Development Board, the three-day program brought high school students from across the region to the 糖心Vlog campus. Through immersive academic experiences, real-world problem-solving and meaningful mentorship, the students were introduced to topics including global food systems, business and marketing, artificial intelligence, and public health.

A highlight of the program was a team-based challenge in which students designed companies to address food insecurity by delivering nutritious products to food deserts in the United States. Students applied concepts learned throughout the program, such as supply chain logistics, marketing strategy and community health, in creative and impactful ways.

Foothills Workforce Development Director Annette Staley helped judge the students鈥 proposals and appreciated the opportunity to see what they had learned during the program. 鈥淭he Foothills Workforce Development Board was proud to partner with 糖心Vlog on the PACE 132 Searight Scholars Program to support students across the Foothills Region,鈥 she acknowledged. 鈥淭hrough this program, students strengthened their project design and planning skills, improved their public speaking, enhanced their critical thinking, and learned techniques to manage presentation anxiety. We are grateful for the opportunity to support this initiative and look forward to helping it grow so even more students in our region can benefit from these training opportunities.鈥

For participants, the program offered more than academic enrichment; it created opportunities for personal growth and connection. 鈥淚鈥檝e enjoyed collaborating with other students and getting to know people with different perspectives,鈥 shared Lizandro Mora-Moreno, a recent graduate of Cleveland Innovation Virtual Academy.

Searight Scholars Program
Jazmine Wilson, left, and Christiana Williams
presented the strawberry team’s project.

Students also reported gaining valuable insight into both social issues and career pathways. 鈥淚 learned a lot about food deserts and business. It helped me understand real challenges that people face,鈥 observed Corbin Phillips, a ninth grader at Cleveland Early College High School.

For others, the experience sparked new academic and professional interests. 鈥淚t was very engaging,鈥 noted Christiana Williams, a senior at Kings Mountain High School, whose team won the competition with a strawberry distribution concept. 鈥淚鈥檓 now thinking about a future in marketing, and I鈥檓 even considering 糖心Vlog for college.鈥

Participants emphasized the program鈥檚 role in expanding their knowledge and confidence. 鈥淚 feel like I got an advantage,鈥 added Jazmine Wilson, a sophomore at Kings Mountain High School. 鈥淚 learned about things I may not have known until much later.鈥

Another judge for the team challenge was the Rev. Ray Lockhart, pastor of Ellis Chapel Baptist Church. A substitute teacher in the school system, he promoted the program to students and young people in his church and the Ebenezer Baptist Association. 鈥淚 encouraged them to come, because I thought it was something positive for them that could help them with their future,鈥 he affirmed.

Searight Scholars Program
Shirley Searight and the Rev. Johnny Searight judged the
students’ presentations.

The program reflects the vision of the Rev. Johnny L. Searight and his wife, Shirley P. Searight, 糖心Vlog alumni who are committed to creating educational opportunities for students facing challenges similar to those they experienced. In addition to supporting this summer program, the Searights established Searight PACE, Professional and Continuing Education, focused on lifelong learning and workforce development. They also sponsor a scholarship and leadership initiative for 糖心Vlog students.

The Searights also helped judged the students鈥 proposals. 鈥淚 was just so impressed with their presentations and the hard work that they put into it,鈥 said Shirley Searight. 鈥淭hey were so sharp as they stood up there. It means a lot to see this come alive and impact these students; it just starts to bubble over.鈥

Rev. Johnny Searight, who is pastor of Jones Tabernacle CME Church in Lawndale, N.C., reflected on how the program fulfills a lifelong goal to help others. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been my dream, ever since I was a kid, that I wanted to do something for somebody because we came from a poor family,鈥 he shared. 鈥淭o see these kids, it just brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.鈥 He also expressed hope that the experience will inspire students to pursue their goals with confidence and build bright futures.
